History of the JCRS
The Japanese Coral Reef Society (JCRS) was founded in November 1997, and its membership currently exceeds 600. The JCRS holds annual meetings and publishes an English-language journal, Galaxea, Journal of Coral Reef Studies; a Japanese-language journal, The Journal of the Japanese Coral Reef Society; and quarterly newsletters.
Until 1997, the International Coral Reef Symposium (ICRS) was the only forum for Japanese coral reef researchers to discuss the results of their research, as no coral reef network existed in Japan before then. In 1996, Japanese participants in the ICRS in Panama agreed to establish a Japan-based society devoted to the study of coral reefs. The Japanese Coral Reef Society was established as a result of the efforts of many people. In November 1997, the inaugural symposium of the JCRS was held in Okinawa, and the first annual conference was held in Tokyo in November 1998. Researchers with diverse backgrounds related to corals manage JCRS activities and promote relevant research to clarify the complex mechanisms that characterize coral reefs and disseminate this information.
